Divergent Books in Order
Divergent is the dystopia that rode the post-Hunger Games wave to its top: Veronica Roth's Chicago, where sixteen-year-olds choose one of five virtue factions and the heroine's aptitude test breaks the system - she is Divergent, fitting no faction, and therefore unkillable by the government's simulations. Three novels in three years (2011-2013), a film franchise with Shailene Woodley, and the rare distinction of a trilogy whose final film was never made - the studio planned to split Allegiant in two, the first half flopped, and Ascendant exists only as a cancelled project. The order question is one small trap: Four, the companion story collection, is marketed as a prequel but is best read after the trilogy, and this page explains why (2011–2014).
Where to start
Divergent (2011), chapter one of Beatrice Prior's choice. The trilogy is one continuous story with one arc - no reordering, no spin-offs to detour into first.

Does the reading order matter?
Strict trilogy order: Divergent (2011), Insurgent (2012), Allegiant (2013) - one story, one ending that halves the fandom, best experienced unspoiled. The companion question: Roth wrote four e-novellas from Four's perspective (2012-2013), then collected them with new linking stories as Four: A Divergent Collection (2014) - the collection spans Four's childhood through the trilogy's events from his side, so read it after Allegiant, as a coda, not before. Free Four (2012), a bonus scene from Four's view of a knife-throwing scene in Divergent, sits anywhere after book one. We Can Be Mended (2018), a short epilogue story set five years later, is for completists only - it is set after Allegiant and assumes the ending. The films: Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015), The Divergent Series: Allegiant (2016) - and the fourth film was never made.
Which one is the best?
Divergent (2011), the tightest of the three; Insurgent (2012), the simulation-heavy middle; and Four (2014) for readers whose favorite character was always Four.
