Percy Jackson Books in Order
Percy Jackson is Rick Riordan's ADHD, dyslexic New Yorker who discovers he is a son of Poseidon — the myths are real, Mount Olympus sits atop the Empire State Building, and summer camp is Camp Half-Blood. The Lightning Thief (2005) began as bedtime stories Riordan told his son, became a middle-grade phenomenon, and grew into a three-series universe of seventeen Percy-centered novels and counting, plus the Disney+ adaptation that rebooted the franchise properly in 2023 (2005–present).
Where to start
The Lightning Thief, always. It was written first, it carries the most famous arc (the lightning bolt, the betrayal, the twist on every reread), and it sets the voice the whole universe runs on — wry, fast, sincere. Read the five original Olympians novels straight through before touching anything else: they are one escalating story with a proper ending in The Last Olympian. Only then continue to Heroes of Olympus, which follows directly.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, which is the intended order. The five original Olympians novels form a single arc; Heroes of Olympus is the direct sequel (set months later, with a jarring first-book POV shift to a new character — push through, Percy returns in book two); Trials of Apollo follows on from Heroes' ending. In 2023 Riordan resumed the numbering with The Chalice of the Gods and Wrath of the Triple Goddess (#7, 2024), which sit after everything as Percy's senior-year stories — read them last, not sixth and seventh. The whole universe is chronological as published; the only trap is reading the new Senior Year books early.
Which one is the best?
The Last Olympian is the consensus peak — the five-book payoff, and the one fans reread. Among the sequels, The House of Hades is the most commonly cited favorite (it splits the party and gives the series its darkest, best stretch), and The Blood of Olympus its most argued-about ending. Of the new books, The Chalice of the Gods is a return to the original voice and the gentlest good time in the universe.
