Rick Riordan Books in Order
Rick Riordan turned a bedtime story for his son - a Greek-myth textbook repackaged as a kids novel - into the biggest middle-grade fantasy franchise of the century: five interleaved series sharing one timeline, north of 190 million copies sold, and a Disney+ adaptation now filming beyond its second season. The Riordanverse is not one series but a grid: Greek and Roman demigods, Egyptian magicians and Norse warriors, each with a five- or three-book arc, stitched together by crossovers that assume you have been paying attention. That makes the reading-order question genuinely real - the Heroes of Olympus books spoil all five Percy Jackson novels, and the newest releases return to a Percy who is now applying to college (2005–present).
Where to start
The Lightning Thief (2005), always. It is the franchise door, it is the Disney+ season one source, and it is genuinely the funniest of the twenty-plus books. Two honest alternatives for specific readers. Adults sampling the shelf for a kid can hand over The Red Pyramid (2010) - Egyptian mythology, a brother-sister pair, fully independent of Percy. And readers who have already seen both Disney+ seasons should still read from the top: the show compresses and reorders, and the books carry the jokes and the emotional beats the runtime cannot.

Does the reading order matter?
Read the grid in tiers, not strictly by year. Tier one: Percy Jackson and the Olympians 1-5 (2005-2009). Tier two: Heroes of Olympus 1-5 (2010-2014) - a direct continuation that spoils Percy's ending, and its own order is strict, ending on the cliffhanger-to-payoff pair Mark of Athena / House of Hades. Tier three: Trials of Apollo 1-5 (2017-2020) follows immediately and names the new canon. The Kane Chronicles (3) and Magnus Chase (3) run parallel and independent, though the Demigods and Magicians shorts officially cross Kane with Percy. The 2020s wave - The Chalice of the Gods (2023) and Wrath of the Triple Goddess (2024), numbered 6 and 7 of Percy Jackson - is set after the entire grid, with Percy navigating college recommendations. The Sun and the Star (2023) follows Nico and is best after Trials of Apollo. The Wild Zone (September 2026) opens a new arc back at Camp Half-Blood.
Which one is the best?
The Lightning Thief is the classic; The Last Olympian (2009) is the payoff and the fandom consensus peak of the original five. House of Hades (2013) is the Heroes of Olympus high point, and The Tower of Nero (2020) stuck the landing on a fifteen-book demigod saga. Among the newer books, The Chalice of the Gods (2023) was the warm homecoming fans had wanted for a decade, Wrath of the Triple Goddess (2024) made bestseller lists on release, and Daughter of the Deep (2021) - a standalone Jules Verne sequel with no mythology at all - is the critics pick and the easiest gift for a non-Percy reader.
