  1. What is Thalia's tree? — The pine at the camp's border, grown where Zeus's daughter died - and the camp's magical fence. Thalia Grace died holding the hill; Zeus turned her into a pine, and her life force powers the border. Poison the tree and every monster in America knows the address.
  2. Who is Tyson? — A young Cyclops - and Percy's half-brother, another son of Poseidon. The homeless kid Percy defended at school turns out to share his father - a baby Cyclops who works in Poseidon's underwater forges and adores his big brother, to the Poseidon cabin's public embarrassment and eventual pride.
  3. Who poisons Thalia's tree? — Luke, on Kronos's orders. The reveal at the end: Kronos wants the camp undefended - but the poison is only half the plan, and the Fleece proves to be the other, stranger half.
  4. Who is officially given the Fleece quest? — Clarisse, daughter of Ares - while Percy is banned from leaving camp. Tantalus hands the quest to Clarisse out of spite; Percy, Annabeth and Tyson sneak out anyway, and both parties end up needing each other before the end.
  5. What does Clarisse's father send her for the voyage? — The CSS Birmingham - a Civil War ironclad crewed by Confederate zombie sailors. Ares resurrects a Confederate warship for his daughter - complete with a ghost crew who take orders and complain about the accommodation. Every Percy Jackson book has one detail this gloriously unnecessary.
  6. What happens to Percy at Circe's spa, C.C.'s Resort? — He is turned into a guinea pig. Circe is still in the spa-and-wellness business; men still leave as rodents. Annabeth gets the hero moment - talking her way in and dosing Percy back with Hermes' vitamins.
  7. How is Grover saved from Polyphemus? — He's wearing a wedding dress - the Cyclops thinks he's the bride. Grover's venus-flytrap disguise plays on a Cyclops's eyesight and expectations, stretching one Odyssey joke into forty of the book's funniest pages.
  8. What is the true consequence of the Fleece healing the tree? — It revives Thalia herself - Kronos's real plan all along. The Fleece is too powerful for one tree: it gives the dead daughter back - and a daughter of Zeus on the board is exactly the piece Kronos wanted moved.

About The Sea of Monsters

Someone has poisoned Thalia's tree - the pine at Camp Half-Blood's border that grew from the daughter of Zeus who died on Half-Blood Hill - and the camp's magical defenses are failing. Chiron is fired, a nightmare named Tantalus takes over, and the only cure is the Golden Fleece, which is currently worn as a lucky scarf by a man-eating Cyclops in the Sea of Monsters. Percy's quest to retrieve it is complicated by two things: the camp gives the job to Clarisse, and Percy's new baby half-brother turns out to be a Cyclops. The novel runs about 64,000 words (roughly 279 pages in a standard paperback) — about 4 hours and 29 minutes of reading at an average pace. Before you commit, see the full breakdown in how long it takes to read The Sea of Monsters or calculate reading time for any other book.

Same voice and pace as book one - a weekend read for adults, a confidence-builder for middle-grade readers. The Odyssey references run a layer deeper, so readers who know Homer get extra jokes, and readers who don't learn the Cyclops chapter for free. If you get 6 or more of the eight questions right, the book clearly stuck.

What this quiz covers

Rick Riordan’s The Sea of Monsters sits in our epic, adventure & fantasy shelf, and the eight questions follow the book the way a reader experiences it: how the story opens, the turn in the middle, the characters who carry it, and the ending people still argue about. You will not be asked for page numbers or publication trivia — but three or four questions are built to separate people who read the book from people who read a summary. If a question stumps you, that gap is your reading list talking.

Fair warning for the ambitious: readers who clear this quiz often move straight to the reading-time breakdown for The Sea of Monsters to plan the reread, then test the rest of their shelf against the mixed classic literature quiz.
