The Hunger Games Books in Order
The Hunger Games is Suzanne Collins' Panem: a post-apocalyptic North America where twelve districts send two children a year to fight on live television, told through Katniss Everdeen, who volunteers for her sister and accidentally starts a war. The original trilogy (2008–2010) was a publishing earthquake — tens of millions of copies, four films, a generation of dystopia in its wake — and since 2020 Collins has been filling in the history with prequels: a young Coriolanus Snow, then a young Haymitch, with a sixth Panem novel reported for 2027 (2008–present).
Where to start
The Hunger Games (2008), without argument. It is the book the phenomenon was built on, the tightest thing Collins has written, and the one all four others orbit. Read the trilogy straight through — Catching Fire and Mockingjay are direct continuations, not companions. Only then take the prequels, in publication order: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, then Sunrise on the Reaping. Reading the prequels first is possible (each is self-contained) but backwards: they are written for readers who know what Panem becomes, and their best moments are dramatic irony — watching a character walk toward a fate the trilogy already showed you.

Does the reading order matter?
Two valid orders. Publication order — trilogy, then Ballad (64 years before the games Katniss enters), then Sunrise (24 years before) — is the recommended one, for the irony reason above. Chronological order — Ballad, Sunrise, then the trilogy — reads as a straight history of Panem and is preferred mostly by rereaders. Do not start with the prequels on a first pass. Within the trilogy, order is mandatory: Catching Fire and Mockingjay are one continuous story. A reported sixth novel (the 65th Hunger Games) is scheduled for April 2027 — if it lands, it slots between Ballad-era and trilogy-era Panem, and this page will place it.
Which one is the best?
The Hunger Games is the best entry and, for pure construction, arguably the best book — nothing wasted, the reaping to the arena to the berries. Catching Fire is the most commonly named favorite (its midpoint reversal is the series' single best chapter), and Mockingjay the most argued-about ending. Among the prequels, Sunrise on the Reaping has been received as the stronger — the Haymitch material hits hardest for trilogy readers.
