Red Rising Books in Order
Pierce Brown's Red Rising is the sci-fi series that starts as a Hunger Games-shaped rebellion under the surface of Mars and ends as space opera on the scale of Dune - six published novels, one delayed finale, and one of the most intense fandoms in the genre. The structure is the key to reading it: a complete first trilogy (2014-2016), a second trilogy that jumps ten years and multiplies its points of view (2018-2023), and Red God, the seventh and final book, which as of October 2026 has no announced date - Brown confirmed in March 2026 it will not make 2026. Readers describe the series in two sentences: the first book is the weakest, and never stop on a cliffhanger (2014–present).
Where to start
Red Rising (2014), book one - there is no other door. The series is one continuous war told in escalating acts: Darrow's infiltration of the Gold academy in book one is setup the next six books cash, and the cast introduced early becomes the point-of-view ensemble of books four through six. Fair warning worth having before page one: the first hundred pages read like a different, rougher YA novel than the one the series becomes. Push through - it is the single most common speed bump new readers report, and the reason the fandom's advice is uniform.

Does the reading order matter?
Strict publication order, no exceptions, no skipping. Every novel ends on material the next assumes; the second trilogy (Iron Gold onward) jumps a decade, adds new point-of-view characters, and re-frames the first trilogy's victories - reading it first would be reading spoilers for the entire original story. The honest shape: books 1-3 are Darrow's rebellion, a complete trilogy with a real ending; books 4-6 are the aftermath, darker, longer, and told through ten eyes; book 7, Red God, concludes it. Around the novels: the Sons of Ares graphic novels are a prequel about the rebel Ares and fully optional, and a hybrid novella-graphic project, The Book of Lorn, is announced but undated as of October 2026.
Which one is the best?
Golden Son (2015) is the consensus peak - the book that breaks the series open, and regularly named in best-of-the-decade sci-fi lists. Morning Star (2016) delivers a genuine trilogy ending. Among the second act, Dark Age (2019) is the fandom's brutal favorite and Light Bringer (2023) the payoff. The honest warning that belongs in every best-of note: the cliffhangers are structural, and Brown ends books mid-datum - plan to own the next one before finishing the current one.
