Dune Books in Order
Dune is Frank Herbert's 1965 desert planet — Arrakis, spice, sandworms, and Paul Atreides, a duke's son who becomes something more dangerous than emperor. It won the first of science fiction's five Hugo-and-Nebula doubles, sold tens of millions of copies, and became the genre's uncontested doorstop classic. Herbert wrote five sequels in his lifetime; since 1999 his son Brian Herbert, with Kevin J. Anderson, has filled in ten thousand years around them in fifteen more novels, with the Denis Villeneuve films and HBO's Dune: Prophecy driving a new wave of readers to the shelf (1965–present).
Where to start
Dune (1965), always. It is one of the few consensus masterpieces of the genre, it is self-contained with a real ending, and everything else — Herbert's own five sequels included — assumes you have read it. From there the honest default is to continue in publication order with Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, which finish Paul's story. Readers who love the politics and ecology but not the messianic philosophy often stop after the third; pushing to God Emperor is the series' real test, and its payoff divides even fans. The Brian Herbert and Anderson prequels are a separate decision made after the core six, not before.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, twice over. The six Frank Herbert novels run 1965-1985 and go 1 through 6: Messiah and Children continue Paul directly, God Emperor jumps thousands of years, and Heretics and Chapterhouse jump again to a new cast — each sequel assumes the last. The Brian Herbert and Anderson books fill the past (the Legends and Great Schools trilogies sit ten thousand years before Dune; Prelude sits a generation before; Caladan and Heroes sit directly around it), but they were written after and are best read after — they constantly trade on knowledge of what the core six set up. Chronological-order reading is possible for rereaders only; first-timers who begin with the Butlerian Jihad are reading the weakest books first with the least context.
Which one is the best?
Dune is the best book and it is not an argument — it is the genre's most awarded novel. Among the sequels, God Emperor of Dune is the great divider: the strangest and most philosophical, and the one fans who stay the course name as the true heir. In the extended canon, the Prelude to Dune trilogy (House Atreides onward) is the accepted best of the prequels — closest to Frank's characters, written from his notes.
