- Which faction is Beatrice Prior born into? — Abnegation, the selfless. Abnegation runs the government precisely because its members don't want to - and Beatrice's brother Caleb is the natural Abnegation child, not her.
- What makes Tris's aptitude test result so dangerous? — It is inconclusive - she tests as Divergent. Tori administers the test and goes pale: 'Divergence is extremely dangerous.' A result for three factions instead of one means the simulations can't fully control her.
- How does the Choosing Ceremony work? — Each sixteen-year-old cuts their hand and lets blood drop into the bowl of their chosen faction. Wheat for Abnegation, glass for Candor, water for Erudite, earth for Amity, burning coals for Dauntless - Tris's blood hisses on the coals.
- What is Four's real name? — Tobias Eaton. The instructor named for his four fears is Marcus Eaton's son - and Abnegation's most famous runaway. The reveal lands during stage two of initiation.
- What does Al do after he's cut from Dauntless initiation? — He jumps into the chasm. After attacking Tris at the chasm in a last attempt to stay, Al begs her forgiveness and she refuses - 'I am nothing... Never come near me again' - and the next morning he's gone over the edge.
- How does Erudite turn the Dauntless army on Abnegation? — A simulation serum injected at 'trackers' lets Erudite control the soldiers remotely. Jeanine Matthews's transceiver serum turns Dauntless into sleepwalking soldiers - everyone except the Divergent, which is why Tris wakes up inside the marching army.
- What does Tris's first Dauntless tattoo mark? — Three birds - one for each member of the family she left behind. Three birds on her collarbone: 'One for each member of the family I left behind' - the moment she takes her old life with her into the new faction.
- What does Tris conclude about herself in the last lines? — She is no longer just selfless or brave - she must become more than either. 'I am no longer Tris, the selfless, or Tris, the brave. I suppose that now, I must become more than either' - the final page, on the train out of the compound.
About Divergent
In a Chicago where everyone is sorted at sixteen into one of five factions by a single virtue - and everyone else is factionless - Beatrice Prior's aptitude test comes back blank. Choosing Dauntless, the brave, she renames herself Tris and discovers that the ability to be more than one thing is the most dangerous result of all. The novel runs about 105,000 words (roughly 487 pages in a standard paperback) — about 7 hours and 21 minutes of reading at an average pace. Before you commit, see the full breakdown in how long it takes to read Divergent or calculate reading time for any other book.
Moderate - first-person present-tense YA prose, very fast; the faction system asks you to keep five sorting rules in your head. If you get 6 or more of the eight questions right, the book clearly stuck.
What this quiz covers
Veronica Roth’s Divergent sits in our dystopia & allegory shelf, and the eight questions follow the book the way a reader experiences it: how the story opens, the turn in the middle, the characters who carry it, and the ending people still argue about. You will not be asked for page numbers or publication trivia — but three or four questions are built to separate people who read the book from people who read a summary. If a question stumps you, that gap is your reading list talking.
Fair warning for the ambitious: readers who clear this quiz often move straight to the reading-time breakdown for Divergent to plan the reread, then test the rest of their shelf against the mixed classic literature quiz.
