Kay Scarpetta Books in Order
Kay Scarpetta - Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia, forensic pathologist, Italian cook, helicopter pilot - is Patricia Cornwell's genre-founding character: Postmortem (1990) essentially invented the modern forensic thriller and is routinely credited with paving the road to CSI. Thirty-six years on the series is still running, still charting real technology (DNA, CT scanning, digital forensics), and newly everywhere again: Prime Video's Scarpetta, with Nicole Kidman in the title role and Jamie Lee Curtis beside her, premiered March 2026 with two seasons ordered up front. The books divide cleanly into eras, and the two style breaks are famous (1990–present).
Where to start
Postmortem (1990), number one. It won the Edgar for Best First Novel, was built on the real Richmond strangling cases of 1987, and introduces the whole ensemble - niece Lucy, detective Marino, FBI profiler Benton Wesley - whose relationships carry thirty years of payoff. Do not start anywhere else: the early run is a continuous arc (Temple Gault, Carrie Grethen) and the later books assume you know everyone's history. Readers who only want one classic often read The Body Farm (#5) as a standalone - it works, but it spoils #1-4's arcs.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, with the timeline continuous from 1990. Two documented style breaks tell you where the eras fall: from The Last Precinct (#11, 2000) the novels shift from past tense to present, and from Blow Fly (#12, 2003) they shift from Scarpetta's first person to third-person omniscient - fans mark the first-person era as the classic one. The pace steadies to roughly annual; the longest gap is Chaos (2016) to Autopsy (2021). Book 30, Rapid and Fatal, arrives January 19, 2027.
Which one is the best?
Postmortem is the essential one - the genre's origin point. From Potter's Field (#6) and The Body Farm (#5) are the classic-era peaks; Point of Origin (#8) closes the strongest early arc. The Last Precinct (#11) is the great pivot - half the series' fans date their falling-out from it and the other half call it the best. Among recent volumes, Autopsy (2021) was received as a genuine comeback, and Sharp Force (2025) continued it.
