Joe Pickett Books in Order
Joe Pickett is a Wyoming game warden - not a sheriff, not a detective, a game warden with a badge, a growing family, and a talent for making powerful enemies - and C.J. Box has sent him into the Bighorns once a year since 2001. The series is the modern successor to the Western: poaching cases that unzip into land wars, federal overreach, and the occasional lunatic with a rifle, all written with a naturalist's eye. Box sells in the millions, owns a shelf of Edgar/Anthony/Barry hardware, and his universe has hit screens twice - the Spectrum Joe Pickett series with Michael Dorman, and ABC's Big Sky, which was secretly adapted from one of the books below (2001–present).
Where to start
Open Season (2001), the first. It swept the Best First Novel awards (Anthony, Barry, Macavity, Gumshoe), introduces Joe, his wife Marybeth, the three girls, and the series' whole theory: Joe is honest in a county where honesty is expensive, and every case costs his family something. The honest alternative: Winterkill (#3) is the early fan favorite and nearly standalone, and Three-Inch Teeth (#24, 2024) is the modern entry point readers cite - but Joe's family situation is cumulative, and the callbacks land hardest in order.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, one novel every spring since 2001, and the order is genuinely load-bearing: Joe's daughters age in real time, his career scars accumulate, and villains occasionally survive to return. Two things sit beside the main line. The Cody Hoyt / Cassie Dewell novels share the universe - Back of Beyond introduces Hoyt, The Highway introduces Dewell (and is the book ABC's Big Sky was built from), and her own run continues through Treasure State. And Box's standalones, led by the Edgar-winning Blue Heaven, are separate one-offs. As of October 2026 the main series runs to twenty-six.
Which one is the best?
Open Season remains the classic and the award-sweeper. Winterkill (2003) is the early peak fans reread; Nowhere to Run (2010) and Force of Nature (2012) mark the stretch where the series stopped being a secret. Off the Grid (2016) was the first to debut at #1 on the New York Times list, and Battle Mountain (2025) is widely called the best in years - the rare twenty-fifth novel that drew new readers in.
