Michael Connelly Books in Order
Michael Connelly covered the crime beat at the Los Angeles Times before Harry Bosch made him famous, and the reporting never left the prose: his Los Angeles - the freeways, the HollywoodDivision rhythms, the cases that go cold because nobody powerful cares - is as much a character as the detectives. Bosch, the Vietnam-tunnel-rat turned homicide detective, anchors a universe that has quietly grown into the biggest brand in American crime fiction: more than forty novels, four television series, and a crossover web that makes the reading-order question genuinely confusing. Readers arriving from Prime's Bosch, Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer or 2025's Ballard open the shelf and find three overlapping series starring the same aging city - the question is not whether to read Connelly but where to enter (1992–present).
Where to start
The Black Echo (1992), the first Bosch novel - it introduces the tunnel past, the jazz, the LAPD hierarchy and the murder that only Bosch believes in. It is also the source of the Prime series' pilot season, so viewers are on familiar ground. Two honest side doors: Netflix Lincoln Lawyer viewers can start with The Lincoln Lawyer (2005), a near-standalone courtroom thriller whose hero Mickey Haller is Bosch's half-brother; and readers who want Connelly's most celebrated non-Bosch book go straight to The Poet (1996), the newspaper thriller that made his name before the show existed.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order within each series, and the honest map is this page's table: Bosch first (numbered 1-26), then Lincoln Lawyer, then Ballard, then the smaller series. Three crossover facts prevent most confusion. The Crossing (2015) is Bosch #18 but also a Lincoln Lawyer case - Haller defends, Bosch investigates. Dark Sacred Night through The Waiting (2018-2024) are Bosch #21-25 and Ballard #2-6 at the same time - Renée Ballard co-leads them. And A Darkness More Than Night (2000) doubles as the sequel to Blood Work. Retailers number all this differently: count only the novels billed as Harry Bosch books and The Hollow is #26; fold in the crossovers and the numbers climb - which is why Amazon's numbering never quite matches the paperback spines. The four Bosch novellas (Suicide Run, Angle of Investigation, Switchblade, Blue on Black) are collected in Mulholland Dive and slot between the half-numbers.
Which one is the best?
The consensus peaks: The Last Coyote (1995), the novel where Bosch opens his mother's unsolved 1961 murder and the series' emotional core; The Poet (1996), still his highest-wire standalone thriller; and The Lincoln Lawyer (2005), the courtroom engine that launched a second franchise. Among the later run, The Wrong Side of Goodbye (2016) is the fan favorite, and The Crossing (2015) is the best demonstration of why this universe works - Bosch and Haller in one courtroom.
