John Sandford Books in Order
John Sandford is the pen name of John Camp, a Pulitzer-winning newspaperman who turned to fiction and built the most reliable engine in American crime writing: the Prey series, one Lucas Davenport novel a year since 1989, thirty-six of them and counting. Lucas - rich from designing war-gaming software, charming, chronically un-put-downable - moves from Minneapolis homicide to the state BCA to the US Marshals across the run, hunting killers with a violence that sits closer to thriller than cozy. Around him Sandford grew a universe: Virgil Flowers, the fishing, T-shirt-wearing BCA investigator with twelve novels of his own; Letty Davenport, Lucas's adopted daughter, now starring in her own series; and a pace that has not slipped in four decades. New readers mostly arrive from the shelf of a relative who owns twenty of these (1989–present).
Where to start
Rules of Prey (1989), the first and still one of the best - it establishes the game-playing cat-and-mouse structure, Lucas's women and his Porsche, and the Minneapolis the series never leaves for long. Do not start mid-series: Lucas's family grows, his jobs change (city cop to BCA to US Marshal at Golden Prey), and the later books assume you know Weather, Letty and Del. Readers who prefer the spinoff's lazier charm can start with Dark of the Moon (2007), the first Virgil Flowers novel - it works standalone, and Virgil's world assumes only a passing knowledge of his boss.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, and with one book a year since 1989 - two gap years aside, 1997 and 2006, when the standalones came instead - publication order is chronological order. The Prey list runs straight through: Rules of Prey is #1, Revenge Prey (April 2026) is #36, and Ruthless Prey arrives as #37 in spring 2027. Three wrinkles worth knowing. Winter Prey (#5) appears as The Iceman in some markets - same book. Rhymes with Prey (2014) is a #24.5 novella co-written with Jeffery Deaver, optional. And Ocean Prey (#31) is as much a Virgil Flowers novel as a Lucas one. The Flowers series runs on its own track (twelve novels, 2007-2019); the Kidd novels predate the Prey series, the first two published under Sandford's real name John Camp.
Which one is the best?
The consensus peaks: Winter Prey (1993), the frozen Wisconsin stand-alone mood piece fans reread most; Certain Prey (1999) and Mortal Prey (2002), the Clara Rinker two-parter featuring the series' beloved hitwoman; and Rules of Prey for the door it opens. Among the Flowers novels, Dark of the Moon and Shock Wave get the most nominations. Sandford was named an Edgar Grand Master in 2025, and at one novel a year he shows no sign of slowing - Ruthless Prey's synopsis already promises Lucas avenging the murder of a loved one.
