Lucas Davenport Books in Order
Lucas Davenport is John Sandford's Minneapolis investigator - a rich, sharp-dressed, Porsche-driving polymath who designs role-playing games on the side and hunts killers for a living - and the Prey series is one of the longest-running procedural franchises in American crime fiction: thirty-six novels since 1989 that still land on the bestseller list every spring, with a thirty-seventh, Ruthless Prey, due in spring 2027. John Sandford is the pen name of John Camp, a Pulitzer-winning journalist, and the Prey novels practically invented the texture television crime later borrowed: the task-force whiteboard, the multiple point-of-view hunt, the killer's chapters interleaved with the cops'. Readers arriving from the Flowers or Letty spinoffs usually ask the same thing - does the main series demand starting at the beginning (1989–present).
Where to start
Rules of Prey (1989), the first - it introduces the loft, the games company, the wardrobe obsession, and the cat-and-mouse hunt structure every later book refines. Two honest side doors. Readers who want the strongest pure hunt can take Winter Prey (1993, the Iceman case) or Mind Prey (1995, the one filmed in 1999) - both stand almost alone. Readers who want the modern Lucas can jump to Golden Prey (2017, #27), where he joins the U.S. Marshals - a genuine soft reboot with a new employer, new terrain, and no required back story. But the family arc - Weather, the surgeries, Letty's arrival at #14 - pays off only from the beginning.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, and it matters more than the case-of-the-book structure suggests. Each murder stands alone, but three long arcs run strictly forward: the Clara Rinker contract-killer storyline (Certain Prey #10, Mortal Prey #13), the Letty adoption thread from Naked Prey (#14) onward - which eventually produces her own series - and the career ladder from Minneapolis cop to state BCA to U.S. Marshal at Golden Prey (#27). The numbering has never rebooted: thirty-six straight novels plus the Rhymes with Prey novella (with Jeffery Deaver). Virgil Flowers spun off in 2007 with Dark of the Moon, and Lucas's daughter Letty with The Investigator (2022) - both are mapped on the John Sandford page.
Which one is the best?
Winter Prey (1993) - published as The Iceman in some markets - is the fan-named early peak. Mind Prey (1995) is the most filmed. Certain Prey and Mortal Prey are the Rinker pair readers re-read as one story. Buried Prey (2011, #21) is the gut-punch - the case Lucas got wrong - and Golden Prey (2017) the best of the Marshals era. The honest verdict on the run as a whole: no weak decade, and the late-period books read younger than their author's career length suggests.
