Alex Cross Books in Order
Alex Cross - Washington DC homicide detective, forensic psychologist, devoted father - is James Patterson's flagship character and one of the most prolific series leads in publishing history: thirty-six numbered novels since 1993, at a clip of roughly one a year for three decades. The series made the multiple-viewpoint thriller the default mode of commercial crime fiction, spawned film adaptations with Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry, and now carries a Prime Video series with Aldis Hodge. The engine never changes - Cross profiles a monster, the monster targets Cross's family, short chapters accelerate - which is exactly what readers come back for (1993–present).
Where to start
Along Came a Spider (1993), number one. It establishes the whole apparatus - Cross's dual training as detective and psychologist, his family (grandmother Nana Mama and the kids are half the series' heart), the kidnapping case, and Gary Soneji, the antagonist whose shadow Patterson is still exploiting: Return of the Spider (2025), novel thirty-four, is a direct companion to this book. The honest alternative is Kiss the Girls (1995), the most famous entry thanks to the film - it works nearly standalone, but Soneji's arc begins in book one, so serious readers should start there.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, numbers 1 to 36, and unlike most long series it is genuinely load-bearing: Cross's family ages, losses accumulate, and recurring villains return across decades. Two wrinkles to know. Alex Cross's Trial (#15, 2009) is a historical novel set in 1906 Mississippi, framed as Alex recounting his ancestor's story - it is the one book readers routinely skip and nothing later depends on it. And Patterson occasionally published two in a year (2009, 2013, 2023), so box sets and retailer numbering drift by one in some markets. As of October 2026 the count runs to thirty-six, with The Family Cross arriving October 19, 2026.
Which one is the best?
Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls remain the twin peaks - the two Morgan Freeman films exist because of them. Jack & Jill (#3) is the early-run connoisseur's pick; Cross My Heart (#21) is the divisive career pivot where Cross loses everything and the following books deal with it. Among recent volumes, Return of the Spider (2025) got the series' best reviews in years by going back to its beginning.
