Karin Slaughter Books in Order
Karin Slaughter writes the most physically brutal crime fiction on the bestseller lists - and hides it inside one of the trickiest linked universes in the genre. Her first series, Grant County, ran six novels before its lead crossed over into the Will Trent books, which now run to twelve and became an ABC television series; the crossover point is load-bearing, and readers who start Will Trent blind will hit a wall of spoilers in the third book. Around the two linked series sit the famous standalones - Pretty Girls, The Good Daughter, Pieces of Her - and since 2025 a third series, North Falls, whose second installment arrived in August 2026 (2001–present).
Where to start
Blindsighted (2001), Grant County #1 - the intended door, and the only one that makes the crossover pay off a dozen books later. Readers who come from the ABC series: Triptych (2006) is Will Trent #1 and stands on its own, with the caveat that it sits beside the Grant County finale. Standalone readers: Pretty Girls (2015) - the one people press on strangers.

Does the reading order matter?
Grant County first, complete, then Will Trent in publication order. The two series share Sara Linton: Beyond Reach (2007) - published in the UK as Skin Privilege - closes her Georgia story, and Triptych (2006) runs alongside it; Undone (2009), Will Trent #3 and UK title Genesis, is the formal crossover that merges the casts permanently, and it assumes you know how Grant County ended. The Will Trent novels then run straight through This Is Why We Lied (2024). The standalones are genuinely standalone except one pair: Girl, Forgotten (2022) is a sequel to Pieces of Her (2018), following Andrea Oliver into the US Marshals. Cop Town is its own 1970s Atlanta story; the North Falls novels are a cold start with no connections.
Which one is the best?
Blindsighted remains the guaranteed hook; Pretty Girls is the standalone people call the best thing she has written; Criminal (2012), which rewinds to 1975 to hand Will and Sara their shared history, is the series peak for long-time readers; and The Last Widow's opening fifty pages are routinely called the most frightening of her career.
