Will Trent Books in Order
Will Trent is Karin Slaughter's Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent — severely dyslexic, obsessively meticulous, and shaped by an Atlanta foster-care childhood the series unpacks one layer at a time. The series began with Triptych in 2006, absorbed the heroine of Slaughter's earlier Grant County books when Sara Linton crossed over in Undone, and has become the spine of her Atlanta universe — the books behind the ABC television series that brought a fresh wave of readers to the shelf (2006–present).
Where to start
Start with Triptych — it is written as the door in, introducing Will mid-case with no homework required. TV viewers can jump straight in too: the show borrows characters and arcs freely, so the books feel like a parallel telling rather than a recap. If you fall for Sara Linton and want her whole backstory, the Grant County series (Blindsighted onwards) is the prequel shelf — but it is optional, and most Will Trent readers arrive here first.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, which is also the intended order. Two notes: Criminal is a dual-timeline origin story that pays off hardest after Fallen and Broken, so resist the urge to read it early; and the novellas (Snatched, Busted, Cleaning the Gold) are optional side-stories slotted between the novels — canon, but snacks rather than meals. From Undone onward the Grant County characters are part of the cast; Slaughter wrote those crossovers expecting new readers, so you will not be lost.
Which one is the best?
Triptych remains the favorite entry and a fair answer for the best single book. Readers most often name The Kept Woman and The Silent Wife as the series at full power, and Criminal as the one that recontextualizes everything — the flashback structure turns the whole series into a tragedy you understand better the further in you are.
