Harry Hole Books in Order
Harry Hole - Oslo police detective, alcoholic, brilliant, impossible - is Jo Nesbo's maverick, and the thirteen novels carrying his name are the summit of Nordic noir's international wave: locked-room puzzles executed with crime-fiction craftsmanship and a detective whose self-destruction is as load-bearing as the cases. The Snowman alone sold millions and became the Michael Fassbender film; the whole series sits permanently on bestseller lists in a dozen languages. Two quirks trip up new readers: the early novels were translated out of order, and the series rewards order more than most police-procedural runs. What follows is the complete shelf, the entry points that work, and the ones that only look like entry points (1997–present).
Where to start
The Bat (1997), the actual first - Harry in Australia on a case, establishing the voice, the damage, and Rakel, the love the whole series orbits. The common alternative is The Redbreast (2000), the first of the run Nesbo considers the series proper (it is where many non-Norwegian readers entered, because The Bat was translated last into English). Do not start with The Snowman despite its fame: it is mid-series, it assumes Harry's history, and its shocks land twice as hard with the run behind them.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, and it genuinely matters: the Redbreast-to-Devil's Star arc is one continuous neo-Nazi story, and the Snowman-to-Phantom stretch runs one escalating personal war. The years below are first (Norwegian) publication - English editions of the early run arrived years later and out of sequence, which is why older guides scramble the first three. Every case is formally solvable standalone, but Nesbo plants consequences that detonate books later. Book fourteen, Kill Shot, arrives November 5, 2026.
Which one is the best?
The Snowman (2007) is the famous one and the series' best pure thriller - the serial-killer plot that made Nesbo a global brand. The Redbreast (2000) is the connoisseurs' pick - the WWII neo-Nazi plot Nesbo built the series on. Nemesis (2002) and The Leopard (2009) round out the usual top tier, and Phantom (2011) is the devastating one readers either name first or last. The Thirst (2017) is the strongest of the late run.
