Frank Herbert Books in Order
Frank Herbert wrote the best-selling science fiction novel of all time and then twenty more books that almost nobody reads - and the order question splits exactly there. Dune (1965) won the first Nebula, shared the Hugo, and became a phenomenon its own author spent five sequels chasing; the other shelf - submarine psychodrama, insect hive thrillers, a novel about a whipping-star alien - is where his strangest ideas live. He died in February 1986, leaving the sixth Dune book on a cliffhanger his son Brian later resolved. This page maps the whole shelf, marks the six, and rescues the best of the rest (1955–1986).
Where to start
Dune (1965) - obviously. Hellstrom's Hive (1970) for the secret best non-Dune novel.

Does the reading order matter?
Two shelves, one publication order below - the kind column marks which. The Dune six run 1965 to 1985 and are covered in full on our Dune guide: Dune (1965), Dune Messiah (1969), Children of Dune (1976), God Emperor of Dune (1981), Heretics of Dune (1984), Chapterhouse: Dune (1985) - strict order, no exceptions, and Chapterhouse ends mid-story on the page after his last finished sentence. The other shelf first: The Dragon in the Sea (1955) is the debut, a submarine psychological thriller still respected. Destination: Void (1966) begins the ship-brain thread he finished with Bill Ransom in The Jesus Incident (1979), The Lazarus Effect (1983) and The Ascension Factor (1988, posthumous). The Green Brain, The Eyes of Heisenberg and The Heaven Makers (1966-68) are the mid ideas; The Santaroga Barrier (1968) is the cult-town one; Whipping Star (1970) is the unclassifiable comedy about a government agent whose client is a sentient star being whipped to death. Hellstrom's Hive (1970), the secret best of the non-Dune shelf, and Soul Catcher (1972), the Native American novel that trades genre entirely, close the run. Read Dune first, always; then either down the Dune line or sideways into Hellstrom
Which one is the best?
Dune (1965); Hellstrom's Hive (1970); God Emperor of Dune (1981), the strangest sequel.
