Isaac Asimov Books in Order
Isaac Asimov wrote or edited more than five hundred books, but readers arrive for one of two doors: Foundation, the collapse-and-rebuild of a galactic empire, or the Robot novels, where a human detective and a robot who cannot lie solve crimes. Late in life he welded the two universes together, which created the question this page answers - the reading order that makes the merge land - and the answer is not the one the book spines suggest. The in-world chronology starts fifteen thousand years early and spoils the late novels; publication order does not (1950–1992).
Where to start
I, Robot (1950) then The Caves of Steel (1953), or Foundation (1951) straight in. Both doors reach the same merge.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, with one rule: finish the original Foundation trilogy and the Robot novels before the 1980s continuations, because those late books - Foundation's Edge (1982), The Robots of Dawn (1983), Robots and Empire (1985), Foundation and Earth (1986) - are where the two series quietly become one, and the reveal works only if you know both worlds. The original Foundation trilogy is Foundation (1951), Foundation and Empire (1952), Second Foundation (1953). The Robot novels are The Caves of Steel (1953), The Naked Sun (1957), The Robots of Dawn (1983). The Empire books - Pebble in the Sky (1950), The Stars, Like Dust (1951), The Currents of Space (1952) - are the connective tissue; read them whenever, ideally between the two big series. The Gods Themselves (1972) is the one great standalone, unrelated to either universe. The trap to avoid: reading by in-world chronology, which begins with robots and ends tens of thousands of years later at Foundation's Edge - it is the order Asimov himself described, and it flattens every surprise the merge was built to deliver
Which one is the best?
Foundation (1951); The Caves of Steel (1953); The Gods Themselves (1972), the standalone.
