Ursula K. Le Guin Books in Order
Ursula K. Le Guin wrote the two most permanent shelves in American fantasy and science fiction - Earthsea, the archipelago of wizards that Tolkien readers cross into, and the Hainish novels, the thought experiments that gave the field The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed - and then kept writing past both, into the Western Shore books and the late gifts like Lavinia. Her order question is really three order questions, because the three shelves barely touch. She died in January 2018; the shelf is closed, and the Earthsea reading order has its own guide page on this site. This page maps all three shelves and the standalones, and marks the one 18-year gap that matters (1966–2018).
Where to start
A Wizard of Earthsea (1968) for fantasy; The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) for SF - the two doors.

Does the reading order matter?
Three shelves, separately. The Hainish cycle, in publication order: Rocannon's World (1966), Planet of Exile (1966) and City of Illusions (1967) are the early Hainish books - readable, minor; then the peak, The Left Hand of Darkness (1969), the planet of one sex, and The Dispossessed (1974), the anarchist twin worlds, both Hugo and Nebula winners. The Word for World Is Forest (1976), Four Ways to Forgiveness (1995) and The Telling (2000) close the cycle; the early three are skippable, the 1969-74 pair is the reason she is canon. Earthsea runs six books: the original trilogy (1968, 1971, 1972), then the 18-year gap - Tehanu (1990), which breaks the trilogy's shape on purpose, then Tales from Earthsea and The Other Wind (2001); the strict order and the fork discussion live on our Earthsea page. The third shelf: the Annals of the Western Shore - Gifts (2004), Voices (2006), Powers (2008) - and the standalones, from the experiments of Always Coming Home (1985) to Lavinia (2008), her last major novel, a voice given to a silent woman of the Aeneid. Start anywhere; do not skip the 1969-74 pair
Which one is the best?
