Boxcar Children Books in Order
The Boxcar Children is the series that taught America to read above its reading level: four orphaned siblings, an abandoned boxcar, and a mystery formula simple enough to be trusted. Gertrude Chandler Warner - a schoolteacher who rewrote her own 1924 debut in 1942 for reluctant readers - wrote nineteen books before her death in 1979, and Albert Whitman has kept the Aldens solving mysteries ever since: the main series passed #160, a 21-book Specials line ran through the 1990s, and spinoff mini-series keep arriving today. The order question is unique here because the real reading list is Warner's nineteen - the ghostwritten hundred-forty are interchangeable episodes with no arc - and this page gives both maps: the canon with years, and the machine (1942–present).
Where to start
The Boxcar Children (1942), always - the boxcar itself, the finding of Grandfather, the origin of everything. It is the only book in the series with an actual plot arc; every later book assumes you know the Aldens are settled and beloved.

Does the reading order matter?
Warner's nineteen run 1942 to 1976 in strict order and reference each other lightly (Benny's age is the running clock - start him at five and stop asking). After Warner's death the main series resumed in 1991 with #20 and became episodic: any post-Warner mystery can be read in any order, and the numbering runs past #160. The Specials (1993-2003, 21 books) are longer travel mysteries; The Great Adventure (2017, 5 books) is a centenary-era arc; The Aldens of Fair Meadow Farm (2012) is the prequel about the children's parents. One trap: the 1924 original Box-Car Children is a different, rougher text - the 1942 rewrite is the book everyone means.
Which one is the best?
The Boxcar Children (1942), one of the most influential children's books ever written; Surprise Island (1949), the fan-favourite summer sequel; and Houseboat Mystery (1967), late-Warner comfort at its peak.
