Alex Rider Books in Order
Alex Rider is the teenager who proved spy fiction could be a young-adult genre: fourteen years old, press-ganged into MI6 after his uncle's death, and sent through twelve novels of assassins, boarding-school infiltrations and increasingly personal vendettas - millions of copies sold worldwide, graphic-novel adaptations running alongside, and a television series that covered the first six missions across three seasons. The order question is clean - one series, read in order - but two footnotes matter: a short-story collection that some retailers shelve as a numbered installment, bumping every later number by one, and a villain-side prequel that reframes the whole series if read at the right moment. The series was once finished - the ninth book was billed as the final mission - before Anthony Horowitz brought it back (2000–present).
Where to start
Stormbreaker (2000), the debut - Alex is fourteen, his uncle has just died in a car accident with no seatbelt on, and the truth arrives by chapter two. It is short, complete and designed as a door. There is no better entry point: the continuity rewards are the whole point of the series.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, full stop - Alex ages, the villains escalate and the MI6 relationships rot in sequence. Two footnotes: Russian Roulette (2013) tells the hitman Yassen's side of the story and spoils the early books' backstory, so read it after Scorpia Rising at the earliest; Secret Weapon (2019) is a short-story collection set across the whole series - some lists number it as the eleventh book, which bumps Nightshade to twelve and Nightshade Revenge to thirteen, but the novels themselves run to twelve. Nightshade (2020) and Nightshade Revenge (2024) are one continuous story and should be read back to back. No thirteenth novel is announced.
Which one is the best?
Scorpia (2004) is the gut-punch the series builds toward and the book fans reread most; Scorpia Rising (2011) is the emotional payoff billed as the end; Russian Roulette is the beloved experiment that hands the pen to the villain; Stormbreaker remains one of the great opening chapters in young-adult fiction.
