Jack Reacher Books in Order
Jack Reacher is Lee Child's ex-US Army military policeman — 6'5", 250 pounds, honorably discharged, owning nothing but a folding toothbrush and an ATM card. He rides buses at random, drinks black coffee, and keeps finding towns with something rotten in them. Since Killing Floor in 1997 the series has sold over 100 million copies, and since The Sentinel (#25) it has been co-written with Child's brother Andrew — with a novel a year, like clockwork, ever since (1997–present).
Where to start
Killing Floor, the 1997 debut, and it is not close. It introduces Reacher mid-drift with no backstory homework required, it won the Anthony Award for Best First Novel, and every running pattern of the series — the arriving, the wrongness, the violence, the leaving — is already in place. Readers who specifically want Reacher's army years can begin with The Affair (#16), the origin story set as he leaves the service, but it pays off best when you already know who he becomes. The Amazon Prime television series adapts the books in its own order; fans of the show can start anywhere it pointed them.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, with two chronology notes. The Affair (#16) and Night School (#21) are prequels set during Reacher's army days — both are fine in place, but read The Affair after at least a few earlier books so the origin lands. Otherwise the series runs forward in publication order: Reacher ages slowly, references accumulate gently, and nothing spoils badly. The novels are structurally standalones (each town, each fight), so emergency mid-series entry works — Persuader (#7) is a common favorite landing spot — but the slow arc of the man is best preserved 1 through 31. No Middle Name (2017) collects the short stories; canon, but snacks rather than meals.
Which one is the best?
Killing Floor remains the best single entry and a fair answer for the best book. Persuader (#7) is the most commonly named mid-series peak — a tight revenge structure with a flashback trick — and Make Me (#20) the strongest of the later solo Childs. Among the co-written era, readers most often cite In Too Deep (#29). The honest pattern: the first dozen are the tightest, the series' pleasure after that is the ritual itself.
