Jack Carr Books in Order
Jack Carr spent twenty years as a Navy SEAL sniper and officer before writing James Reece, the operator whose entire team is killed in an ambush he comes home from - and the seven-novel Terminal List series that followed is the most technically authentic thriller franchise of its generation. The books found a second life when Chris Pratt played Reece in Amazon's 2022 adaptation, and Carr now writes with the confidence of a man building a universe: a Reece prequel about his father, a co-written spinoff series, and nonfiction alongside the main line. Expect real weapons, real tradecraft, and a body of villains (2018–present).
Where to start
The Terminal List (2018), the first and the show's source. It is the rawest of the seven - grief, betrayal and revenge with almost no safety rails - and it plants every relationship the series pays off later. Do not start anywhere else: each novel assumes the previous one's body count and alliances. Viewers coming from the Prime series are one book behind the screen after season one, and the show changed enough (timing, tone, one major casting choice) that the novel reads fresh.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, all seven: The Terminal List, True Believer, Savage Son, The Devil's Hand, In the Blood, Only the Dead, Red Sky Mourning. The series escalates geographically and geopolitically with each entry, and later books quietly pay off minor characters from early ones, so the order is load-bearing. Around the main line: Cry Havoc (2025) is a full prequel novel about Reece's father in 1968 Vietnam, readable at any point but richest after book 3; The Fourth Option (2026) launches a separate co-written series with M.P. Woodward and is not a Reece book; and State of Exile arrives October 1, 2027 as Reece #8.
Which one is the best?
The Terminal List is the honest peak - the anger of it is the franchise's engine, and the novel remains the best pure thriller Carr has written. Savage Son (2020), the Mexico-set third, is the fans' favorite escalation; Only the Dead (2023) is the Africa-set connoisseur's pick. Red Sky Mourning (2024) is the most current - drones, AI and the wars it predicts - and the one that made Carr a fixture on military-news roundtables.
