Robin Hobb Books in Order
Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings is one sixteen-novel story told in five series, and the order question has a real answer: publication order, always. Hobb built the trilogies to detonate each other's secrets - the Liveship books quietly reframe what the Fool is, the Rain Wilds books pay off a Liveship cliffhanger, and the final trilogy, Fitz and the Fool, assumes you have lived with FitzChivalry Farseer for twenty years. Read out of order and the biggest reveals land as trivia instead of earthquakes. This page sequences all sixteen novels, marks where each new cast enters, and flags the two places readers historically bail (1995–2017).
Where to start
Assassin's Apprentice (1995), the debut - a royal bastard handed to a stableman and a diary that becomes a legend. It is the front door to the entire Realm; every later series is downstream of it. Do not start with Ship of Magic because it looks standalone: it spoils the Farseer trilogy's aftermath.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order: Farseer trilogy (1995–97), Liveship Traders (1998–2000), Tawny Man (2001–03), Rain Wild Chronicles (2009–13), Fitz and the Fool (2014–17). The one common mistake is reading Tawny Man straight after Farseer because Fitz is the narrator of both - the Tawny Man trilogy drops references to Liveship events that are spoilers if unexplained. The Rain Wilds quartet is the loosest link (new cast, one returning character) and the usual first skip - but Fitz and the Fool pulls its key revelation from it. Fool's Fate (2003) was a designed ending; the 2014 return was a genuine second act nobody expected.
Which one is the best?
Royal Assassin (1996) for the tightening of the noose; Fool's Fate (2003) as one of fantasy's great designed endings; and Fool's Assassin (2014) - Hobb bringing back her hero as a broken old man and making it her best-reviewed book.
