Discworld Books in Order
Discworld is Terry Pratchett's flat world carried through space on the backs of four elephants standing on a turtle - and its forty-one novels are the most beloved comic fantasy ever written: 80 million copies, a satire machine that starts as Tolkien parody and matures into the sharpest social fiction of its era. The question everyone asks is not whether to read Pratchett but how - forty-one books, six interleaved subseries, no obvious book one. The honest answer is that Discworld is a city, not a corridor: you enter through the district that suits you, and the subseries map below is the real reading order (1983–2015).
Where to start
Guards! Guards! (1989) - the first City Watch novel and the consensus best door into Discworld. It has the series' full machinery running: Ankh-Morpork, Lord Vetinari, Captain Vimes before he becomes great. The honest alternatives: Mort (1987) if the Death-and-a-grim-reaper hook appeals (it is the warmest single entry), or Wyrd Sisters (1988) for the Witches. The one door to avoid is also book one: The Colour of Magic (1983) is the parody-era debut, visibly the roughest, and the reason many readers bounce off the series a page too early.

Does the reading order matter?
The table is publication order, with every novel tagged by subseries. Two orders coexist honestly: publication order preserves Pratchett's own growing-up as a writer, and it is the order first-timers should read within a chosen subseries. The subseries themselves are independent enough to read in any order, with one rule: within a line, go in order - Vimes, Granny Weatherwax, Tiffany Aching and Death's family each develop across their books. The Shepherd's Crown (2015), the final volume, closes the Tiffany line and stands as Pratchett's farewell.
Which one is the best?
Night Watch (2002) is the masterpiece - the time-travel Vimes novel and the book that converts skeptics into evangelists. Small Gods (1992) is the towering standalone. Hogfather (1996), Going Postal (2004) and The Truth (2000) are the usual next picks, and The Shepherd's Crown (2015) is the one readers finish with their throats tight.
