Shannara Books in Order
Shannara is the fantasy saga that proved Tolkien could have heirs: Terry Brooks' thirty-two novels across four decades, from The Sword of Shannara (1977) - the novel that made epic fantasy commercially viable after Tolkien - to The Last Druid (2020), the ending Brooks was still writing in his seventies. It is also the rare shelf where the two orders genuinely diverge: the books' internal chronology begins in our own near-future world, runs through an apocalypse, and only then reaches the Shannara everyone came for - while Brooks wrote it in a completely different order, and recommends first-timers follow publication, not chronology. This page maps both, and tells you which order fits which reader (1977–2020).
Where to start
The Sword of Shannara (1977), Brooks' own recommendation for first-timers - the original quest, written to be read first, and the book that launched the entire genre's commercial revival. Readers who prefer chronological purity: Running with the Demon (1997) begins the secret modern-day beginning, but know it reads as urban fantasy for three books before any Shannara appears.

Does the reading order matter?
Two valid orders. Publication order (used by the table below) is what Brooks recommends: The Sword of Shannara, Elfstones, Wishsong, then the Heritage tetralogy, and onward - the prequels and bridges land with maximum effect once you know what they explain. Chronological order runs: Word & Void (modern day), Genesis of Shannara (the apocalypse), Legends of Shannara, First King of Shannara (the prequel), then the original trilogy, Heritage, Voyage, High Druid, Dark Legacy, Defenders, and finally The Fall of Shannara - the last four books, which close the whole saga. The MTV series adapted Elfstones (season one) and Wishsong (season two). The Paladins of Shannara novellas are garnish.
Which one is the best?
The Elfstones of Shannara (1982) is the consensus peak - tighter, darker, and the source of the TV series; The Sword of Shannara is the classic door; The Wishsong of Shannara (1985) closes the original trilogy; and The Black Elfstone (2017) gave the final tetralogy its strongest opening.
