Magic Tree House Books in Order
Magic Tree House is the chapter-book on-ramp of a generation: siblings Jack and Annie discover a tree house full of books that whisks them anywhere the page points, and across more than 130 million copies Mary Pope Osborne has used that device to quietly deliver dinosaurs, Pompeii, Shakespeare, the Titanic and the moon landing to readers aged six to nine. The series hides one genuine trap for parents buying online: in 2017 the publisher renumbered everything. Books that had been Magic Tree House 29 through 55 became a separate Merlin Missions line of 27, and a new run of main-line adventures restarted at 29 - so box sets, library shelves and retail listings follow three different numbering schemes depending on the era (1992–present).
Where to start
Dinosaurs Before Dark (1992), book one in every numbering scheme - Jack and Annie meet Pteranodons in the Cretaceous, and the formula (a research book, a whisper of danger, home before dinner) is established in ninety pages. There is no wrong entry after that: the first twenty-eight are strictly episodic, one destination per book, and a child who is obsessed with ninjas or dolphins should simply be handed the ninja or dolphin book.

Does the reading order matter?
Within the main series, publication order is chronological order and barely matters - each adventure stands alone. The structural rules are about the two lines. The original 28 (1992-2003) are short, simple starter chapter books. Merlin Missions (Christmas in Camelot, 2001, onward) are longer, darker and more arc-driven - once Jack and Annie become apprentices of Merlin and Morgan, a loose throughline exists, so read those in internal order. The post-2017 main-line books (29 through 40, A Big Day for Baseball onward) reset to the classic formula for the next cohort of six-year-olds. The Fact Trackers (43 nonfiction companions) pair with the fiction titles by subject and slot in beside them.
Which one is the best?
The early run is untouchable for read-aloud: Dinosaurs Before Dark, The Knight at Dawn and Mummies in the Morning form the classic opening trilogy, and Midnight on the Moon (#8) closes the original mystery of who owns the tree house. Among Merlin Missions, Christmas in Camelot is the fan favorite and the emotional pivot of the whole franchise. Of the newer main-line books, Hurricane Heroes in Texas (#30) and Sunlight on the Snow Leopard (#36) show the formula still working thirty years in.
