Dog Man Books in Order

Dog Man is Dav Pilkey's half-dog, half-cop, all-heart graphic novel series - created, like Captain Underpants before it, by an author who was told as a kid that he could not sit still in class, and it is now the bestselling graphic novel series on the planet, with a DreamWorks movie in theaters since January 2025. Fourteen main books in under a decade, each launching straight to number one, each a few hundred pages of slapstick, flip-o-ramas and the sincerity that makes parents cry on page two hundred. The order question from parents is refreshingly simple: the series is episodic, the gags reset, and there is exactly one running change worth knowing about going in (2016–present).

Where to start

Dog Man (2016), book one - it sets up the origin (a police dog and a cop fused into one hero after an explosion), the whole cast, and the running joke engine. The honest alternative for a kid who saw the movie: start anywhere. The books do not serialize; a seven-year-old handed Big Jim Believes (the newest) misses nothing but a few callbacks to running gags, which to a seven-year-old is not a loss but a mystery to solve backward.

Does the reading order matter?

Publication order, which is also internal order, and it barely matters: each book is one self-contained adventure with a fresh villain or two, and the emotional throughline (Petey the cat's slow redemption) moves in small enough steps that nothing is spoiled by jumping. The one thing worth knowing: the newest pair, Big Jim Begins (2024) and Big Jim Believes (2025, number fourteen), shift the spotlight onto the side character Big Jim - funny for newcomers, richer for veterans. The Cat Kid Comic Club spinoffs (five books, 2020-2023) star Petey's kitten Li'l Petey teaching a frog class to make comics and can be read at any point after book three or so.

Which one is the best?

Lord of the Fleas (2018) and Mothering Heights (2021) are the fan peaks - the second is the one that makes parents mention they cried at a Dog Man book. For Whom the Ball Rolls (2019) is the tightest pure-comedy entry. Among the new wave, Big Jim Begins (2024) was the biggest launch in the series' history, and Big Jim Believes (November 2025) extended the Big Jim arc. The DreamWorks film (January 2025) adapts roughly the first three books.
