Lee Child Books in Order
Lee Child was made redundant from British television at forty, bought paper and pencils, and wrote Killing Floor (1997) - the book that launched Jack Reacher, the drifter ex-military-policeman who owns a folding toothbrush and nothing else. The series ran to a hundred million copies and an Amazon Prime show, and in 2020 Child began handing it to his brother Andrew, who co-writes the series under the same name. This page is the complete list in publication order - all thirty-one - plus the two story collections and the one chronology question readers actually argue about (1997–present).
Where to start
Killing Floor (1997), the first-person debut. Or Persuader (2003), a favorite entry point written to work as a first Reacher.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, which is also the numbering. The one wrinkle: The Enemy (2004), The Affair (2011) and Night School (2016) are prequels set in Reacher's army-police days, so reading strictly by number means the timeline jumps backward three times - most readers accept that, and the prequels land better once you know who Reacher became. The co-written era begins at The Sentinel (2020): Lee and Andrew Child from #25 to #30, with Chain Reaction (#31) the newest and the handover continuing. The short-story shelf - No Middle Name (2017) and Safe Enough (2024) - sits anywhere, and the stories deliberately scatter across the whole timeline. One trap for completists: none of the novels depends on the stories, and only the prequels reward being read in any particular slot
Which one is the best?
Killing Floor (1997); Persuader (2003); Gone Tomorrow (2009), the late-career favorite.
