Kathy Reichs Books in Order
Kathy Reichs is the real thing the fictional version pretends to be: a board-certified forensic anthropologist who worked mass graves in Guatemala and Ground Zero, and who wrote her first novel, Deja Dead (1997), about a forensic anthropologist named Temperance Brennan working Montreal murders - which became twenty-four novels, the television series Bones (loosely, very loosely), and the second-most-famous forensic franchise in publishing after Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta. The series runs on procedural craft rather than soap: each book a case, a body, a science, and a deadline. The order question matters because Brennan's personal life (a daughter, an ex, a detective, a Chicago exile that ends) accumulates quietly across twenty-eight years. This page sequences the whole run, through Evil Bones (November 2025) (1997–present).
Where to start
Deja Dead (1997), #1 - the Montreal debut, and the book that establishes the science. Readers who want the recent peak: A Conspiracy of Bones (#19, 2020), the comeback.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order throughout - the cases are standalone but the cast builds: Deja Dead (1997) through Devil Bones (2009) run the Montreal-Charlotte spine; the middle years bring the Chicago trial arc and the Ryan relationship; A Conspiracy of Bones (2020) resets the series with Brennan suspended and alone; Evil Bones (November 2025) is #24, the newest. Two Nights (2017) is a standalone outside the series - Sunnie, the bounty hunter. The Virals line (Seizure-era, five young-adult novels co-written with her son Brendan Reichs) is a separate shelf for teenagers. The Bones television series (2005-2017) shares almost nothing but the name and profession - the TV Brennan is her producer's invention.
Which one is the best?
Deja Dead (1997), the debut that set the forensic standard; Bare Bones (2003), the mid-run peak; A Conspiracy of Bones (2020), the late-career reset.
