Jeffery Deaver Books in Order
Jeffery Deaver is suspense built by an engineer: novels plotted on index cards, forty-chapter architectures engineered to plant six twists in the last eighty pages, and a signature trick - the reveal that reverses everything you had accepted, then reverses again. His flagship is Lincoln Rhyme, the quadriplegic criminalist who solves crimes from his bed through his red-haired partner Amelia Sachs, sixteen novels that turned forensic procedure into chess. Around it sit two more series - the reward-hunter Colter Shaw books and the kinesics-expert Kathryn Dance novels - plus standalones and one official James Bond. The order question matters less than the twist discipline: Deaver series are built so every book reads clean (1997–present).
Where to start
The Bone Collector (1997), the first Rhyme novel and the franchise door - Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie filmed it in 1999. Honest alternatives: The Never Game (2019) opens the Colter Shaw line with Deaver's most modern machinery (a literal gamified manhunt), and The Bodies Left Behind is a fine standalone sampler of the twist discipline.

Does the reading order matter?
Rhyme in publication order - the forensic partnership and Rhyme's body, relationships and cases evolve, and The Cold Moon (#7) introduces Kathryn Dance, whose own four-book series spins out from it; read the Dance books after Cold Moon and before Solitude Creek's Rhyme crossover texture. The Colter Shaw novels stand apart, though South of Nowhere (2025) pulls Amelia Sachs into a case - the two lines now share a universe, so Shaw is best after Rhyme. The Vanished Man (#5) and The Midnight Lock (#15) are frequently listed under variant titles and reprint numbers; follow the order below, not the numbering on older paperback spines. Deceptions (August 2026), the new story collection, deliberately pairs Rhyme and Shaw stories.
Which one is the best?
The Bone Collector is the classic and still the tightest. The Coffin Dancer (#2) is the fan-favorite for pure twist economy, and The Broken Window (#8) - data theft, identity, a villain who frames Rhyme himself - reads more current every year. Among the Shaw books, The Never Game is the strongest entry point Deaver has written this century. The NBC series Lincoln Rhyme (2020) adapted the first novel for one season.
