His Dark Materials Books in Order
Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials is the great anti-Narnia: a trilogy built around a girl, her daemon, and a war on a false heaven, published as Harry Potter was peaking and HBO adapted through 2022. The universe then doubled with The Book of Dust, a second trilogy that braids a prequel (baby Lyra) with a sequel (Lyra at twenty). One title trap first: the first book is Northern Lights everywhere except America, where it is The Golden Compass - same book, different cover. This page maps the whole universe in the order that protects the reveals (1995–present).
Where to start
Northern Lights (1995), always. The Book of Dust only after the original trilogy.

Does the reading order matter?
The original trilogy, strict: Northern Lights (1995, The Golden Compass in the US), The Subtle Knife (1997), The Amber Spyglass (2000) - one story, one arc, read straight through. The companion novellas - Lyra's Oxford (2003), Once Upon a Time in the North (2008), Serpentine (2020) - are short gifts that slot anywhere after the trilogy. The Book of Dust is where order needs care: La Belle Sauvage (2017) is a prequel set when Lyra is a baby, and The Secret Commonwealth (2019) is a sequel set when she is twenty - both are richer after the trilogy, and The Secret Commonwealth assumes the secrets of the first three books are old news. So: trilogy first, always, then La Belle Sauvage, then The Secret Commonwealth. The Rose Field (2025) closes the Book of Dust - Pullman calls the whole thing an equel, neither sequel nor prequel - and completes the universe as of now
Which one is the best?
Northern Lights (1995), the perfect opening; The Amber Spyglass (2000), the finale people argue about; The Secret Commonwealth (2019), the grown-up Lyra.
