Harry Potter Books in Order
Harry Potter is the best-selling book series in the history of the medium: seven novels, 1997 to 2007, six hundred million copies, eighty-five languages, and the rare distinction of being both a children's publishing phenomenon and a generational identity. The order question looks trivial - seven numbered books - but the shelf has grown fringe: a two-part play that continues the story nineteen years later and splits the fandom on whether it counts, three companion books written for charity that exist inside the fiction, a film series that split the finale, and a television reboot now filming at Leavesden, one book per season. This page orders the canon and the fringe honestly (1997–2007).
Where to start
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997; Sorcerer's Stone in the US) - book one, and the only door. The series ages with its reader: the books grow from children's mystery to war novel, so the reading level of book one is the point, not a flaw.

Does the reading order matter?
The seven novels in strict order, one school year each: Philosopher's Stone (1997), Chamber of Secrets (1998), Prisoner of Azkaban (1999), Goblet of Fire (2000), Order of the Phoenix (2003), Half-Blood Prince (2005), Deathly Hallows (2007). The fringe: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (2016) is a stage play script, set nineteen years after book seven - read it after the septology and know that its canon status is contested; the three companions - Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages (both 2001) and The Tales of Beedle the Bard (2008) - are charity books written as Hogwarts textbooks and in-fiction fairy tales; they slot anywhere. The films (2001-2011) adapt one book each except Deathly Hallows, split in two. The HBO reboot - a season per book, with John Lithgow as Dumbledore - has been filming at Leavesden since mid-2025.
Which one is the best?
Prisoner of Azkaban (1999), the perfect mystery-box year; Goblet of Fire (2000), the pivot into war; Deathly Hallows (2007), the ending that earned twenty years of waiting.
