Ender's Game Books in Order
Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game is the rare novel that won both the Hugo and the Nebula, and its empire is stranger than one series: the Ender quartet follows Andrew Wiggin across three thousand years of relativity, while the Shadow saga restarts at the same battle school and follows the other kid - Bean - through a near-future Earth. The two series run in parallel from one door, meet once, and split again, which is the reading-order question this page answers. The first book is a door that works for almost anyone; the second, Speaker for the Dead, is a different and better novel that some readers refuse and others call the series' heart (1985–present).
Where to start
Ender's Game (1985), the door. Then the fork: Speaker for the Dead (1986) or Ender's Shadow (1999).

Does the reading order matter?
Start with Ender's Game (1985). Then choose your saga. The Ender line: Speaker for the Dead (1986) - a slower, adult novel about speaking the truth of a dead life, and the book that won its own Hugo and Nebula - then Xenocide (1991) and Children of the Mind (1994). The Shadow line: Ender's Shadow (1999), the parallel retelling of the first book from Bean's side of the battle school - read it immediately after Ender's Game and the two books become one two-sided story - then Shadow of the Hegemon (2001), Shadow Puppets (2002), Shadow of the Giant (2005) and Shadows in Flight (2012), the Earthbound political thread. The two lines share characters exactly once, so pick either and finish it before crossing. Around them: First Meetings (1992) collects the original Ender novellas and stories; the Formic War prequels with Aaron Johnston (Earth Unaware 2012 onward) are for the deep shelf only. The honest fork advice: readers who loved the game read Shadow; readers who loved the ending of Ender's Game read Speaker
Which one is the best?
Ender's Game (1985); Speaker for the Dead (1986), the double-award heart; Ender's Shadow (1999).
