Douglas Adams Books in Order
Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy began as a BBC radio show in 1978, became a trilogy that ran to five books, and left the world the towel, the answer forty-two, and the phrase about life, the universe and everything. He wrote slowly and reluctantly and rewired comedy into science fiction; he died at forty-nine in 2001, mid-project, and the last shelf has an unfinished novel and a posthumous archive. This page runs the whole shelf - the trilogy of five, the two Dirk Gently novels, the odd non-fiction he loved writing most (1979–2002).
Where to start
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979), thirty years of readers can't be wrong. Dirk Gently (1987) second.

Does the reading order matter?
The Hitchhiker's series in publication order: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979), The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980), Life, the Universe and Everything (1982), So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (1984) - the strange gentle fourth - and Mostly Harmless (1992), the bleak one Adams later regretted. The radio series came first, the books adapt it loosely, and each book contradicts the last, which is the joke. Dirk Gently is its own pair: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (1988). The Salmon of Doubt (2002) is posthumous - fragments, essays, and the beginning of a third Dirk novel Adams abandoned; it is the last thing. And Another Thing... (2006) is Eoin Colfer's officially sanctioned sixth Hitchhiker's book - good, but read it only after knowing which jokes are Adams's. Last Chance to See (1990), the endangered-species travel book, is the work he said he loved most, and The Meaning of Liff (1983) is the dictionary of things there should be words for
Which one is the best?
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979); The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (1988); Last Chance to See (1990), his own favorite.
