Neil Gaiman Books in Order
Neil Gaiman is the writer who proved comics could be literature and then did the same for fantasy novels: The Sandman ran seventy-five issues from 1989 and remains the only comic to win the World Fantasy Award for short fiction, and the novels that followed - Neverwhere, American Gods, Coraline, The Ocean at the End of the Lane - built a shelf where myth, horror and English drizzle share every page. A modern-fiction canon author with a Disney film (Stardust), a Laika film (Coraline) and a hit Netflix Sandman adaptation all alive at once. The order question has a clean answer, and one piece of current news: in February 2026 his publisher confirmed a new adult novel, finished, title and date still unannounced. This page sequences the novels and the Sandman spine (1990–present).
Where to start
American Gods (2001) for the big novel, or The Ocean at the End of the Lane (2013) - 180 pages, and the purest hit of what he does. Younger readers start at Coraline (2002); comics-curious readers go straight to Sandman: Preludes & Nocturnes (1989).

Does the reading order matter?
The novels are all standalones - any order works, though Anansi Boys (2005) sits closest to American Gods' world and Neverwhere (1996) is the usual first door. Good Omens (1990) comes first in print but is its own thing, co-written with Terry Pratchett, with its own TV series. The one line that genuinely needs order is The Sandman: ten collected volumes, 1989-2015, read in publication order (Preludes & Nocturnes through The Wake), with the spinoffs - Death: The High Cost of Living, The Dreaming, the Sandman: Overture prequel (2013-15) - after the main run. Norse Mythology (2017) is a retelling, not a novel; the 2026 announcement of a finished new novel has no title or date yet.
Which one is the best?
American Gods (2001), the Hugo and Nebula winner; The Sandman (1989-2015), the monument; and Coraline (2002) - the novella that became a cottage industry.
