Baby-Sitters Club Books in Order

The Baby-Sitters Club is the series that ran a small business out of Claudia's bedroom and a publishing empire out of Scholastic's: 131 main novels between 1986 and 2000, better than 190 million books sold, and a franchise - Mysteries, Super Specials, Little Sister, California Diaries, Friends Forever - that passed 250 titles. Ann M. Martin wrote the early books herself and outlined the machine afterward; Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, Stacey and Dawn middle-schooled through it all. Today there are two on-ramps: the original paperbacks, still everywhere secondhand, and the graphic-novel adaptations that began with Raina Telgemeier in 2006 and brought the club to the Netflix generation (the 2020-21 series got two seasons). Where to start

Kristy's Great Idea (August 1986), book one - the founding of the BSC and still the cleanest entry. Graphic-novel readers start with the Telgemeier adaptation of the same book (2006); it is a faithful gateway to the same order.

Does the reading order matter?

The main series runs #1-#131 in strict order; the first dozen establish the club, the roster changes (Dawn arrives #5, Jessi and Mallory join around #14, Stacey moves and returns), and it ends at The Fire at Mary Anne's House (2000). The spin-offs are pick-any-order episode machines: BSC Mysteries (36, from 1991), the multi-narrator Super Specials, and Baby-Sitters Little Sister (122, 1988-2000) for Karen-era readers. Two sequels matter: California Diaries (15, from 1997), the surprisingly dark YA-toned Dawn spin-off, and Friends Forever (12, 1999-2000), the high-school continuation that is the true ending. The graphic line adapts the main series book-for-book - Telgemeier #1-4, Gale Galligan #5-11, newer cartoonists from #12.

Which one is the best?

Kristy's Great Idea (1986) for the founding; The Truth About Stacey (#3) for the diabetes storyline the series is remembered for; and the Friends Forever run - Martin back on the keys - for the send-off.
