Anne Rice Books in Order
Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles - thirteen novels from Interview with the Vampire (1976) to Blood Communion (2018) - built the modern vampire as we know it: baroque, philosophical, doomed, and interviewed. Rice died in December 2021, the series closed where she left it, and the 2020s gave it a second life on screen: AMC's Interview with the Vampire (season three, The Vampire Lestat, arrived June 2026) and Mayfair Witches, plus a fiftieth-anniversary edition of the original novel in October 2026. New readers face a genuine order problem: three series, one shared universe, a decade-plus gap in the middle, and two different answers to where to start. This guide settles it (1976–2018).
Where to start
Interview with the Vampire (1976), the first - the novel the show adapts, the shortest, and still the best door. It sets the interview frame, Louis and Claudia's tragedy, and the Lestat the next twelve books are secretly about. The honest alternative for readers who want the character the fandom actually loves: The Vampire Lestat (1985), the second book, where Lestat takes the microphone and never gives it back. Start with one of those two - never later, because Queen of the Damned (1988) assumes both.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, and it matters structurally: the first three books form one continuous story (the interview, Lestat's autobiography, the Queen crisis), so 1-2-3 is non-negotiable. Books four and five (The Tale of the Body Thief, Memnoch the Devil) are Lestat solo adventures that stand alone. Books six through ten (The Vampire Armand through Blood Canticle) fan out to other narrators - and this stretch is where the Mayfair Witches series collides with the Chronicles: Merrick (2000), Blackwood Farm (2002) and Blood Canticle (2003) are crossovers, so read the three Mayfair novels (The Witching Hour, Lasher, Taltos) before that stretch. After a decade away, Rice revived the Chronicles with the Prince Lestat trilogy (2014, 2016, 2018) - a soft reboot that works best after the whole back list.
Which one is the best?
Interview with the Vampire remains the classic - the book that rewired vampire fiction. The Vampire Lestat is the fan favorite, a rock-and-roll autobiography that turned the villain of book one into the century's most beloved monster. The Queen of the Damned is the payoff both build to. Among the later books, The Witching Hour - technically Mayfair, not vampires - is the connoisseur's pick and Rice's best single novel. The Prince Lestat revival is for the committed; the honest consensus is the first three are the peak.
