Sookie Stackhouse Books in Order
Sookie Stackhouse is Charlaine Harris's telepathic small-town Louisiana waitress, and The Southern Vampire Mysteries - thirteen novels from Dead Until Dark (2001) to Dead Ever After (2013) - became one of the defining paranormal series of the 2000s and the source of HBO's True Blood (2008-2014), seven seasons that kept the books on bestseller lists a decade. Harris was originally contracted for ten books and wrote thirteen, then stopped: the series is finished, complete and closed, which is genuinely rare on the vampire shelf and half the reason new readers still start it. The tone is the draw - Southern gothic mystery with a wry first-person voice, romance that the fandom still argues about, and a world where vampires have just come out of the coffin (2001–2013).
Where to start
Dead Until Dark (2001), the first. It won the Anthony Award for best paperback mystery, and it plants everything the series runs on: Bon Temps, the telepathy Sookie treats as a disability, the vampire Bill, and Eric Northman, the thousand-year-old sheriff the fandom never recovered from. There is no honest alternative door - the novels are one continuous first-person story, and the romantic pairings are the series' spine, so starting mid-series spoils fights the fandom still relitigates. The books are short and fast; the commitment test is gentle.

Does the reading order matter?
Strict publication order, 1 to 13. This is a single first-person narrative with no resets: Sookie's relationships, injuries and choices carry forward book to book, and the finale assumes all of it. Around the novels sit two companions: the short stories published between books are collected in A Touch of Dead (2009) and slot between the novels but are optional; After Dead (2013) is an illustrated what-happened-next coda for every character - read it absolutely last, because it spoils the ending of book 13 by design. A note for viewers: True Blood season one follows book one closely, season two follows book two, and the show then departs on its own track - arriving from HBO spoils little after book three.
Which one is the best?
Dead to the World (2004), book four, is the fan favorite - the one that made team-Eric a permanent condition and the most common answer to which book shows the series at its best. Dead and Gone (2009) and Dead Reckoning (2011) are the strongest late run. Dead Ever After (2013), the finale, is the most argued-about ending in the genre - readers deserve to know that going in rather than at the finish line. Dead Until Dark remains the cleanest recruiting tool: an Anthony winner that sets every hook.
