Outlander Books in Order
Outlander is Diana Gabaldon's series about Claire Randall, a former WWII combat nurse on a second honeymoon in 1945 Scotland who walks through a standing stone and lands in 1743 — among clan warriors, one of whom, Jamie Fraser, becomes the love of her very long life. Since 1991 the books have braided time-travel romance with historical fiction at doorstop length (the later volumes run 900 pages), and the Starz adaptation has made the series a permanent fixture of the bestseller lists (1991–present).
Where to start
Outlander (1991), always — the stone, 1743, Black Jack Randall, and the marriage that changes the meaning of the word. It is a complete, satisfying novel in itself, and everything after builds on it. The honest pacing note: books one through three (through Voyager) are the beloved core; the later volumes get longer and more diffuse, so finish the first three before judging the series.

Does the reading order matter?
Strictly publication order, which is also chronological — each novel picks up where the last ended, and the series timeline runs 1946-1980 across the frame with long stretches in the eighteenth century. Nothing is optional and nothing can be shuffled: plots, children and one enormous reversal in book two all carry forward. The novellas and side stories (collected in Seven Stones to Stand or Fall, 2017, and A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows) are supplementary — they fill corners of the universe and can be read anytime after the early novels. Book ten, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, has been announced as the finale; it has no publication date yet, and this page tracks it.
Which one is the best?
Outlander itself is the consensus best entry and, for most readers, the best book — the tightest and most romantic. Voyager, the third, is the most commonly named favorite (the print-shop reunion is the series' most famous scene), and Dragonfly in Amber its most heartbreaking. Among the later volumes, Written in My Own Heart's Blood has the strongest following.
