Andy Weir Books in Order
Andy Weir wrote The Martian as a web serial on his blog, worked out the orbital mechanics for free in chapters, and let readers correct his math until Crown picked it up in 2014 - the self-publishing legend of the decade. Three novels later the shelf is still tiny and each one is a problem-solving machine: a man alone on Mars, a heist on the Moon, a teacher alone in space with a resurrected alien linguistics puzzle. A fourth novel, about artificial intelligence, is being written now, and the Project Hail Mary film reached theaters in 2026 with Ryan Gosling. This page runs the whole shelf - it takes ten minutes, and that is its charm (2014–present).
Where to start
Project Hail Mary (2021), his best book. The Martian (2014) if you want the famous one first.

Does the reading order matter?
There is almost no order to manage: The Martian (2014) - the Mars survival story, originally serialized on his site in 2011; Artemis (2017), the Moon heist, the one even fans rank third; Project Hail Mary (2021), the lone-teacher-and-the-alien story that readers call his best. None connect. Read The Martian first for the origin, Project Hail Mary second at the latest. The web-serial origins matter to completists: Theft of Pride (2000), his first full novel, lives on his old site and is a curiosity only. Next on the shelf: an untitled stand-alone about artificial intelligence, in progress and under wraps as of October 2026. On screens: The Martian (2015) is the famous film, and Project Hail Mary arrived in 2026 from Lord and Miller with Gosling as Ryland Grace
Which one is the best?
Project Hail Mary (2021), the best; The Martian (2014), the famous one; Artemis (2017) for completeness.
