- How old is Bilbo at the party that opens the book? — Eleventy-one - 111. 'A Long-expected Party': Bilbo announces 'I regret to announce that - though, as I said, eleventy-one years is far too short a time to spend among such excellent and admirable hobbits' - and then vanishes, on purpose, wearing the Ring.
- What does Gandalf discover after throwing the Ring into Frodo's fire? — The fiery letters of the Ring-verse appear - the words Sauron spoke when he forged it. The lines Gandalf recites in the tongue of Mordor are the book's spine: 'One Ring to rule them all...' Ash-nazg... the fire answers, and seventeen years of doubt end in one June night.
- Why is the Nazgul attack on Weathertop so dangerous to Frodo? — The Witch-king's Morgul-blade wounds him - a fragment works toward his heart. 'A Knife in the Dark': Frodo puts on the Ring to escape and is stabbed by the lord of the Nine. Aragorn's fire and Glorfindel's race to the Ford of Bruinen are all that keeps the splinter from claiming him.
- What is Strider's true identity? — Aragorn, son of Arathorn - the heir of Isildur and the throne of Gondor. The weatherstained ranger at the Prancing Pony is the broken sword's owner - Narsil, the blade that cut the Ring from Sauron's hand, is carried until it can be reforged.
- How does the Fellowship enter Moria, and what was the password? — 'Speak, friend, and enter' - the riddle's answer is simply the Elvish word for friend. The doors of Durin open to 'mellon' - a philologist's joke that doubles as the book's thesis: the answer was in the question all along, if you read the language.
- What happens at the Bridge of Khazad-dum? — Gandalf faces the Balrog, breaks the bridge - and falls with it. A demon of the elder world - Durin's Bane - and the wizard who plants his staff and will not let it pass. 'You cannot pass'... then the bridge cracks, the shadow falls, and the last words are 'Fly, you fools!'
- What does Galadriel's mirror show, and what is her test? — Each viewer sees possible futures - and she is offered the Ring and refuses it. 'I pass the test. I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.' Offered the Ring and dominion, she refuses it - the reason the Fellowship leaves Lórien with light, gifts and hope instead of a new dark queen.
- How does the Fellowship end? — Broken at Amon Hen - Boromir falls defending the hobbits, Frodo and Sam slip away alone. The 'Breaking of the Fellowship': Boromir, undone by the Ring, redeems himself with three arrows in him defending Merry and Pippin; Frodo rows off alone and only Sam, faithful, absurd Sam, wades after the boat. Nine go out; the story forks.
About The Fellowship of the Ring
The first volume of The Lord of the Rings opens with a birthday party that ends in a disappearance, and closes with a fellowship broken on a hillside. Between them: a ring that must be destroyed, a wizard who falls in the dark, an elf-queen who passes her test, and nine walkers set against the Nine Riders. This is the book that taught the twentieth century what a quest looks like - still the gate every fantasy reader passes through. The novel runs about 187,000 words (roughly 423 pages in a standard paperback) — about 13 hours and 6 minutes of reading at an average pace. Before you commit, see the full breakdown in how long it takes to read The Fellowship of the Ring or calculate reading time for any other book.
The prose is elevated and the songs are real songs, so pace your expectations: the Shire stretches luxuriously, and the Council of Elrond is a meeting, not a battle. But the vocabulary is clear and the chapters short. Readers who finish the Barrow-downs are usually home free. If you get 6 or more of the eight questions right, the book clearly stuck.
What this quiz covers
J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring sits in our epic, adventure & fantasy shelf, and the eight questions follow the book the way a reader experiences it: how the story opens, the turn in the middle, the characters who carry it, and the ending people still argue about. You will not be asked for page numbers or publication trivia — but three or four questions are built to separate people who read the book from people who read a summary. If a question stumps you, that gap is your reading list talking.
Fair warning for the ambitious: readers who clear this quiz often move straight to the reading-time breakdown for The Fellowship of the Ring to plan the reread, then test the rest of their shelf against the mixed classic literature quiz.
