- Where does Eliezer's family live at the start? — Sighet, in Transylvania. The Hungarian town where the story begins with Moshe the Beadle's warnings.
- Who first warns the town what is coming, and is ignored? — Moshe the Beadle. Deported early, he escapes a mass shooting and returns — 'and people refused not only to believe his stories, but even to listen.'
- What is Eliezer's father's refusal at the first selection on arrival? — He will not leave Eliezer; they stay together. A father and son stepping through the doors of Auschwitz together — the book's spine.
- What does the sign over the gate at Auschwitz say? — Work is liberty. 'Arbeit macht frei' — work makes you free.
- What happens during the hanging of the child? — A prisoner asks where God is; Eliezer answers that He is hanging there. The pipel too light for the noose to kill quickly; 'Where is He? Here He is — He is hanging here on this gallows.'
- What do the prisoners do on the eve of liberation at Buchenwald? — They gather for prayer — and Eliezer eats instead. The 'trial of God' in the barracks; Eliezer finds himself at the soup cauldron, and never forgives himself.
- What is Eliezer's body's first act after liberation? — Food poisoning from eating too fast. 'I spent my days in total idleness... only the desire to eat.' Then, in the mirror, a corpse gazes back at him.
- What does Eliezer see when he finally looks in a mirror? — A corpse gazing back at him. The last line of the book: the face of a corpse, and it has never stopped looking at him.
About Night
Wiesel's memoir of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, where at fifteen he lost his family, his faith, and the God he argued with. The slim book that made Holocaust memory a duty for every generation since. Read in a night; carried much longer. The novel runs about 35,000 words (roughly 115 pages in a standard paperback) — about 2 hours and 27 minutes of reading at an average pace. Before you commit, see the full breakdown in how long it takes to read Night or calculate reading time for any other book.
Moderate — plain, terrible sentences; short book, slow reading, and it should be. If you get 6 or more of the eight questions right, the book clearly stuck.
What this quiz covers
Elie Wiesel’s Night sits in our american classics shelf, and the eight questions follow the book the way a reader experiences it: how the story opens, the turn in the middle, the characters who carry it, and the ending people still argue about. You will not be asked for page numbers or publication trivia — but three or four questions are built to separate people who read the book from people who read a summary. If a question stumps you, that gap is your reading list talking.
Fair warning for the ambitious: readers who clear this quiz often move straight to the reading-time breakdown for Night to plan the reread, then test the rest of their shelf against the mixed classic literature quiz.
