Toni Morrison Books in Order
Toni Morrison was an editor at Random House shaping Black literature before she became its Nobel laureate - the first Black woman to win the Literature prize, in 1993. Her eleven novels make one long argument about memory and inheritance: what slavery did, what community saves and costs, what history does to a family that tries not to look at it. Three of them - Beloved, Jazz and Paradise - form a deliberate trilogy about memory across a century. She died in 2019, and the shelf is closed. This page runs it in order and marks where the famous ones sit (1970–2015).
Where to start
Song of Solomon (1977), the breakthrough and the best door. Beloved (1987) for the essential one.

Does the reading order matter?
The Bluest Eye (1970), written in fragments around a nightmare, is the raw debut - many start here and it rewards them. Sula (1973) is the fierce short one about two women and a town's judgment. Song of Solomon (1977), the breakthrough, runs Milkman Dead toward a family history; it is the best first Morrison. Tar Baby (1981) is the outlier, then the trilogy-within-the-shelf: Beloved (1987), the masterpiece - a mother, a ghost, the impossible choice - then Jazz (1992), Harlem in the twenties, and Paradise (1997), the all-Black town and the women at the convent; the three share a spine of memory, and Beloved must come first. The late shelf: Love (2003), A Mercy (2008), set in the 1680s before the word slavery settled, Home (2012), the Korean War veteran's road, and God Help the Child (2015), her last novel. Publication order works throughout; the only rule is Beloved before Jazz before Paradise
Which one is the best?
Beloved (1987), the essential one; Song of Solomon (1977); Sula (1973), the sharp short one.
