Haruki Murakami Books in Order
Haruki Murakami ran a jazz bar, decided at twenty-nine to write a novel, and produced the strangest shelf in world literature - talking cats, wells, parallel Tokyos, and the loneliness of ordinary people, all rendered in plainspoken sentences. The order question has one famous trap: the Rat trilogy's first two books were unavailable in English for over thirty years, so older guides start in the wrong place. This page uses Japanese first-edition years (English translations followed one to three years behind), runs the whole shelf, and marks the two doors. His newest novel, The Tale of Kaho, appeared in Japanese in July 2026 - his first with a single female protagonist (1979–present).
Where to start
A Wild Sheep Chase (1982), the door. Norwegian Wood (1987) if you want the famous one first.

Does the reading order matter?
Two doors, then one river. Door one is the Rat trilogy: Hear the Wind Sing (1979) and Pinball, 1973 (1980) - both officially translated into English only in 2015, which is why every pre-2015 reading guide is scrambled - then A Wild Sheep Chase (1982), where the trilogy becomes itself. Norwegian Wood (1987) is the other door and the trap: it made him a superstar and it is his only realist novel - huge, but unrepresentative. Dance Dance Dance (1988) is its loose sequel. The run of masterpieces follows: Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (1985), one narrator in two worlds; The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (1994), the big one - a missing cat becomes a descent into history's dark basement; Kafka on the Shore (2002), the most accessible surreal; After Dark (2004), one Tokyo night. 1Q84 (2009) is the marathon - three volumes, two moons. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki (2013) and Killing Commendatore (2017) continue the mature line; First Person Singular (2020) is stories. The City and Its Uncertain Walls (2023) is the late gift - Murakami rewrote a wall-city idea he first tried at twenty-three. Novelist as a Vocation (2022) is the essay shelf. Read one Murakami and you will find the order yourself
