Franz Kafka Books in Order
Franz Kafka published seven slim books in his lifetime and asked his friend Max Brod to burn the three unfinished novels; Brod refused, and the twentieth century got its nervous system from the ashes. The premise never varies: a man wakes into a logic that has decided against him, and the book follows his attempts to appeal. The comedy is real — it is just playing in a minor key. (1883–1924).
Where to start
The Metamorphosis is the classic entry — one sitting, the most famous opening in modern fiction, and the full Kafka argument in miniature: guilt without a charge, effort without progress, family as both refuge and court. After it, read The Trial, the masterpiece among the novels, and save The Castle for when you are already fluent in his refusal to resolve. The complete stories — A Hunger Artist, In the Penal Colony, A Country Doctor — are where his short-game genius lives.

Does the reading order matter?
The finished stories can be read in any order; the three novels were left unfinished on purpose-adjacent grounds, and reading them back to back is genuinely instructive — The Trial condemns, The Castle stalls, Amerika (his happiest book, left incomplete) keeps escaping. Kafka's own order to Brod was cremation, so any reading order is an act of disobedience. The practical sequence: the stories first to learn the temperature, then The Trial, then The Castle when you want the long version of the same weather.
Which one is the best?
The Trial is the consensus centerpiece; The Metamorphosis is the piece everyone has actually read. The Castle has the deepest cult following among writers themselves.
