Tamora Pierce Books in Order
Tamora Pierce invented the modern young-adult fantasy heroine: Alanna, the girl who swaps places with her twin to become a knight, arrived in 1983 - a decade before the genre had a shelf for her - and the Tortall universe has grown around her for forty years, six series, three centuries of internal history, and a reading order that genuinely matters because each generation's heroine is the previous generation's grown-up. Around Tortall runs the second universe, Emelan, where the Circle of Magic mages train. Pierce is the genre's trailblazer and its warmest worldbuilder, and the order question is the single most-asked thing about her work. This page answers it century by century (1983–present).
Where to start
Alanna: The First Adventure (1983) - where the universe starts and the door ninety percent of readers use. The two common alternates: start with Wild Magic (1992, Daine's line) for a gentler opening, or Protector of the Small's First Test (1999) - but Alanna first is the canon answer, because everyone after her is living in her legend.

Does the reading order matter?
Two universes. Tortall, in internal-chronological blocks: the Song of the Lioness quartet (Alanna, 1983-88), The Immortals quartet (Wild Magic, 1992-96 - Daine, a decade after Alanna), Protector of the Small quartet (First Test, 1999-2002 - Kel, in Alanna's shadow), the Trickster duet (Trickster's Choice, 2003-04 - Alianne, Alanna's daughter), the Beka Cooper trilogy (Terrier, 2006-11 - two hundred years before everyone), and The Numair Chronicles (Tempests and Slaughter, 2018 - the young Numair, set between Beka and Alanna). Publication order works perfectly for the first five; read Beka and Numair whenever, they stand apart. Book two of the Numair Chronicles is drafted but has no confirmed date. Emelan, the second universe: Circle of Magic quartet (Sandry's Book, 1997-2000), The Circle Opens quartet (Magic Steps, 2000-03), The Will of the Empress (2005) and Battle Magic (2013) close the lines.
Which one is the best?
Alanna: The First Adventure (1983), the origin of the modern YA heroine; Lady Knight (2002), Protector's finale; Terrier (2006), the Beka police-procedural reinvention.
