Sword of Truth Books in Order
Sword of Truth is the fantasy epic that ran on doctrine: Terry Goodkind's eleven-novel chase across the Midlands and D'Hara, where wizard's rules outnumber spells and the hero's weapon of choice is moral clarity. It sold twenty-five million copies, gave television two seasons of Legend of the Seeker, and then refused to end - the original 1994-2007 run closed with Confessor, and Goodkind relaunched the story twice more before his death in September 2020, leaving a shelf of twenty-odd books that visitors constantly ask how to sequence. This page maps the whole D'Hara universe: the core eleven, the sequel line, the Nicci continuation and the late serial, with the reading order that avoids the series' one famous trap (1994–2020).
Where to start
Wizard's First Rule (1994), no argument - the classic doorstop opener that establishes Richard, Kahlan, Zedd and the rule itself. Do not begin with The Pillars of Creation (2001): it follows a different protagonist entirely and spoils nothing while explaining nothing; it belongs at position seven, not at the front door.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, with one warning. The core Sword of Truth novels run 1-11 from 1994 to 2007, and books nine through eleven - Chainfire, Phantom, Confessor - form a single inseparable story, so start that final trilogy only if you mean to finish it. The Pillars of Creation (#7) is the famous divisive entry: Richard barely appears, and first-timers who quit the series usually quit here - push through to Naked Empire. After Confessor, Goodkind continued the same story as Richard and Kahlan (The Omen Machine through Warheart, 2011-2015), then spun Nicci, the sorceress, into her own four-novel continuation (2017-2020), wrote The First Confessor (2012), an e-only prequel about Magda Searus a thousand years earlier, and serialized The Children of D'Hara in five novella-sized episodes (2019-2020). The Law of Nines (2009) is a standalone thriller with a glancing connection. Everything after #11 is continuation, not reboot - it all assumes you finished Confessor.
Which one is the best?
Wizard's First Rule (1994) for the door; Faith of the Fallen (2000) is the fan-anointed peak - Richard building a statue in the enemy's capital is the series' thesis; Chainfire (2005) re-ignites the endgame; and Death's Mistress (2017) proved Nicci could carry her own shelf.
