Stephanie Plum Books in Order
Stephanie Plum is Janet Evanovich's out-of-work lingerie buyer turned bounty hunter in Trenton, New Jersey — bad at the job, unable to quit it, and surrounded by a cast (Lula the ex-hooker sidekick, Grandma Mazur, the two men she cannot choose between) that has carried the series since One for the Money in 1994. The numbered titles are the running joke and the reading map in one: every book knows its number and builds on the last, thirty-plus installments and counting (1994–present).
Where to start
One for the Money, always. The Edgar-nominated debut sets every running gag — the doomed cars, the family dinners, Morelli and Ranger — and the series assumes you know them. It is also the best-written stretch of the run: the first dozen books are where Evanovich's comic timing is tightest, so entering anywhere else means starting with weaker jokes about characters you have not met. One for the Money also stands alone well enough that the 2012 film adaptation went straight to it.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, which is the numbering order — the books are built to be read 1, 2, 3. The plot of each case stands alone (a fugitive to catch, a disaster to survive), but the relationships genuinely move: Morelli and Ranger shift positions book by book, Lula's ambitions escalate, and family dinners accumulate callbacks. Past the midpoint the books get more episodic, so emergency jumping-in anywhere after about #8 works — you will miss jokes, not plot. The Between-the-Plums novellas are numbered 7.5, 12.5 and so on: holiday side-stories, optional but fun. The recent installments are co-written with Evanovich's son Peter, and book 32, Split Second, arrives November 2026.
Which one is the best?
One for the Money is the consensus answer — the tightest writing and the origin of everything. Hot Six and Twelve Sharp are the fan-favorite mid-series peaks, and Eleven on Top (the one where Stephanie quits Vinnie's bail bonds office) is the most commonly re-read.
